What is Hospice?
Hospice is a special concept of care designed to provide comfort and support to patients and their families. Patients are referred to hospice when life expectancy is approximately six months or less.

The goal of hospice is to improve the quality of a patient's life by offering comfort and dignity. Hospice addresses all symptoms of a disease, with a special emphasis on controlling a patient's pain and discomfort. Hospice deals with the emotional, social, and spiritual impact of the disease on the patient and the patient's family and friends. The Kenney contracts with local hospitals so that you may receive hospice care on our campus.

We understand that living with a chronic illness is challenging, making end of life decisions is difficult, and that patients and families are partners in improving the quality of care at end of life.

"When I come to The Kenney I am never a stranger. I'm treated like family, from the front desk staff, to the CEO, to the people in the dining room."
- Marilyn Finnila, daughter of a resident

How do we pay for hospice?
Medicare, Medicaid, or the hospice benefit included in individual health plans provides coverage for many patients.

The Medicare Hospice Benefit includes:
  • Visits by doctors, hospice nurses, hospice social workers, counselors and chaplains (in addition to all of the staff supporting you here at The Kenney)
  • Medicines to control pain
  • Durable equipment, such as wheelchairs and walkers
  • Medicare Part D may pay for other medicines not related to the hospice diagnosis
