How do your gifts help The Kenney, its residents and the community?

We have a very special opportunity as a not-for-profit organization to raise money to assist our friends in remaining at The Kenney after they have run out of financial resources and also provide much needed program enhancements for the community.
Over and over again this is brought up when we talk about the “heart” of The Kenney. This is home to many individuals and we are proud to be able to provide for our residents in a dignified, respectful and spiritually nurturing environment.

The reason people may outlive their financial resources is because they move in, they start exercising, eat well, interact with others, go on trips, take art classes among other activities and end up living longer than they ever anticipated. What a great gift!

The Kenney was created in 1901 when Jessie Kenney included in her Will the wishes of both herself and her husband Samuel to provide a community for seniors. Because of the support we have received for over 100 years, we have been able to keep the legacy of Samuel and Jessie Kenney alive. We thank the community, donors, family members and residents for their continued support.

Ways to Give

The Resident Life Care Fund: This is our primary tool for providing financial aid to residents who outlive their financial resources. On average The Kenney provides $500,000 in support to residents in need each year. This will only grow as people live longer, healthier lives.

The Kenney Unrestricted Fund: Donations to this general-purpose fund are spent in the current year for the most pressing needs, including financial assistance.

Planned/Legacy Gifts: Planned gifts are a wonderful way to help The Kenney and its residents for years to come, while creating a legacy for you. The Kenney itself was a planned gift – a legacy gift – given to the community by Samuel and Jessie Kenney.

We accept planned gifts through will bequests, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, pooled income funds and charitable gift annuities. Planned gifts offer numerous ways to save on taxes and, depending on the type of gift, can provide you with increased income.

Memorial Gifts: Any gift to The Kenney can be given “In Memory of” or “In Honor of” a loved one, friend or special occasion.

Please contact Amy Lee Derenthal, Director of Development at 206-933-2739 or by email at ALDerenthal@TheKenney.org if you would like additional information. Each and every gift towards enhancing the quality of life for our residents is appreciated.

The Kenney does not give legal, tax or financial advice. The information on this website is not a substitute for professional counsel. You are encouraged to seek professional legal, estate planning and financial advice before deciding on any charitable gift.

Do you have an old cell phone and you don’t know what to do with it? The Kenney is now a collection point for used cell phones. It’s a fundraiser where phones are sent in to be recycled and receive a donation to The Kenney Life Care Fund in exchange. There’s a box in the administration area of The Kenney where you can drop off your old phones or drop them off at the front reception desk. If you’re not in the West Seattle area, you can donate your old phone and indicate The Kenney as the recipient of the donation by clicking the link below.
