Memory Care Program Commitment

West Seattle’s original senior-living community. The Kenney has been a beloved icon, serving seniors in West Seattle since 1909. In 2015, The Kenney affiliated with Heritage Ministries for additional stability. Through this partnership, The Kenney has ensured that it is well positioned for future stability and growth as a 501(c)3 nonprofit Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), sometimes known as a life-care community offering three distinct levels of living options: Independent Living, Assisted Living and Memory Care.

Bruce Erickson, Vice President of Senior Housing, Heritage Ministries (The Kenney’s parent company) shared, “Over the past 4 years, the collaborative partnership between The Kenney and Heritage Ministries has allowed both organizations to flourish in their mutual passion and mission to serve seniors. We also see tremendous opportunity, in both the immediate and long term future of our industry and our companies.”

Memory Care at The Kenney offers all of the benefits of Assisted Living with the addition of specialized programming in a small, intimate setting. The design of the memory care area enables residents to enjoy the privacy of individual apartments and the freedom to stroll and socialize in a secure environment. The Memory Care neighborhood also boasts the same extensive, high-level services offered in Assisted Living, paired with specialized programming for those living with Alzheimer’s or dementia. A custom designed care plan for each resident provides the most innovative, individualized care available, allowing each resident to thrive in our care. These plans allow staff members to work with residents to minimize stress and maintain a peaceful environment as well as work with medical providers to regulate and manage medications as needed.

The Kenney also offers a unique program for Memory Care residents known as “Connections.” The Connections program offers residents the opportunity to live in the moment in an environment of care that focuses on and validates the residents’ remaining cognitive, emotional, physical, and social abilities, rather than their losses. Connections creates opportunities for meaningful interactions that come from promoting and allowing freedom of movement and participation in activities and programming.

All staff members who work in the Connections program at The Kenney receive special training in dementia care and learn alternative methods to approach residents experiencing Alzheimer’s/dementia to ensure that each resident receives the attention, care, support and love they deserve, while providing education and resources to their families.

Erickson also shared Heritage’s level of commitment to the Memory Care program at The Kenney, “We are committed to investing in our staff through continued training, and program development.” In addition to excellent care and programming within the Memory Care neighborhood, The Kenney offers ample opportunity for family members to visit with one another in privacy.
